Did you know that each year more than 100 babies in North Carolina are born with severely damaged brains or spinal cords? Or that just 400 mcg of folic acid a day may help reduce the risk of these neural tube defects (NTDs) by as much as 70 percent? For over 10 years, the North Carolina Folic Acid Council has worked to reduce the high rate of NTDs in our state.

Congratulations to: Foothills Center for Women in North Wilkesboro, Calabash Medical Center in Calabash, High Point Family Practice in High Point, and Asheboro Family Physicians in Asheboro. Each of these health care provider practices won a $250 Visa check card for having the practice fill out a survey about folic acid awareness before an Office Champion in-service and then having at least two-thirds of the practice send in a post survey 3 months after the in-service. Thirty-three practices qualified for four chances to win. Congratulations and thank you to all participating Family Practice and OB/GYN practices across the state for making your practices more folic friendly.

See what we've been up to! The Spring issue of the NC Folic Acid Campaign's newsletter is now available. In it you'll find stories about our work on Fort Bragg, newly released data on neural tube defects in NC, and a lot of great new research. Click here to read the Folic Acid Forum. (PDF Document)
